Artist in Residence Program

The residency program focuses specifically on interdisciplinary and intercultural exchange, regardless of age and origin. Diversity and inclusion in its many manifestations are important to us. The Kulturhaus Villa Sträuli offers tailor-made residencies with a focus on project support, networking support and presentation opportunities. Our guests receive comprehensive support and are integrated into the program and mediation work of the Kulturhaus Villa Sträuli.

    Integration and participation in the public, varied cultural program of the Villa Sträuli.

  • Time, Rest & Inspiration

    Time and space for research, investigation and focused work.

  • Care & Support

    Professional support and personalized assistance.

    Technical support and curatorial assistance from a professional team.

  • There are two application possibilities:

    1. via a partner institution
    2. via a direct application.

    In addition the Villa Sträuli publishes a call for curators once a year.

  • Villa Sträuli collaborates with partners all over the world to fund residency opportunities. These funding partners call for applications for residencies at Villa Sträuli in their respective countries. Besides, the Swiss Arts Council Pro Helvetia calls for applications at Villa Sträuli.   • Artists and curators can also apply directly at Villa Sträuli.

    Steps to follow:

    - Applicant sends application (see below Guideline for Application).

    - Villa Sträuli’s advisory board reviews the application within three months.

    - Selected applicants will receive an acceptance letter.

    - Selected applicants have two years from the date of the acceptance letter to locate funding. Please note that Villa Sträuli does not locate sponsors for direct applicants.

    - When funding has been secured by applicant, Villa Sträuli confirms directly with sponsor.

    - When sponsor has confirmed, residency will be scheduled.
    - If required applicant must apply for a Schengen Visa.

  • Email a pdf to: application@villastraeuli.com with the following content:

    1. A context-related motivation letter. Please, mention in what period (3 months) you would like to make your residency. The possibilities are: Mid January - mid April, Mid April - mid July, September – November.

    2. Curriculum Vitae (max. 5 pages)

    3. Work samples (images or video links with information or description)

    4. Two Copies of reviews (if applicable)

    5. A reference contact information: please include name, title, institution, email, telephone and address

    Please submit your application only if you are willing to follow the steps explained above.

  • The international AiR program is aimed exclusively at professional artists who want to develop their artistic skills or work on a specific theme.

    We expect continuity and quality as well as potential for development and growth.

    Artists and curators in residence must have a very good command of written and spoken English.

    We do not accept applications from students.

Direct applicants please note that our residencies are scheduled one year in advance.
Start with your application early enough.You can apply throughout the year. There is no deadline for direct applications

  • Established in 1999, Villa Sträuli is a non-profit contemporary art center in the city of Winterthur, Canton Zurich, supporting artistic practice and encouraging interdisciplinary approaches as well as creating bridges between a local and international public and long lasting cooperations.

    Our residency program is conceived to:

    • nurture cross-disciplinary knowledge.

    • enhance artists’ careers by providing them the opportunity to explore a new artistic context, market, community, and culture.

    • develop strategies for collaboration and inclusion of residents in various national platforms, while building a network of practitioners and professionals in the field to new opportunities for collaboration in Zurich and beyond.

    • build sustainable partnerships that support artists’s career path, development, and future international artistic activity.

    Facilities

    Villa Sträuli has three bright, renovated, and autonomous studios. They are all provided with a living and working space, a small kitchen, a bedroom (double bed) plus shower/WC.

    The House also has an exhibition space, a room for lectures and concerts, a workroom for visual artists, a soundproof music studio with a grand piano, a park-like garden, terraces, indoor and outdoor common spaces.
