Maryam Tafakory is an artist and filmmaker whose textual and filmic collages interweave poetry, documentary, archival, and found material. Her broader research explores depictions of erasure, secrecy, [un]touchable, and [un]spoken prohibitions. Her work has been exhibited internationally including shows at MoMA, Locarno Film Festival, True/False, Pergamon Museum, and Anthology Film Archives, among others.

She has received many awards for her work including the Gold Hugo for Best Documentary Short at the 58th Chicago International Film Festival, Best Experimental Short Film at the 70th Melbourne International Film Festival, Tiger Short Award at the 51st International Film Festival Rotterdam; Barbara Hammer Feminist Film Award at the 60th Ann Arbor Film Festival, and the Fugas Prize at Documenta Madrid. She was the 2019 Flaherty/Colgate Distinguished Global Filmmaker, a MacDowell Fellow in 2023 and nominated for the 2024 Jarman Award.

During her residency at the Villa Sträuli, Maryam will be working on the script for her new film, which is part of the "del" series. The first chapter of which, Mast-del, premiered at the 55th Cannes Directors' Fortnight, and the second chapter, Razeh-del, premiered at the 77th Locarno Film Festival in the Pardi di Domani International Competition.
